Rookie forward Alicia Tesan broke a scoreless draw with a goal in the 85th minute as the Trinity Western Spartans spoiled Westmont College Warriors' home opener with a 1-0 victory.

The two women's soccer teams were in Santa Barbara, Calif. as part of the Spartans California pre-season road trip.

On the scoring play, Melissa Mobilio stripped the ball in the midfield and passed it to Rebecca Ferguson. Ferguson's pass was intercepted but the Warriors' clearing attempt was blocked by Daniela Gerig and the ball took a Spartan bounce to Tesan.

One-on-one with the goalie, Tesan buried the ball into the back of the net.

Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh was pleased with his team's performance.

"At half time, I challenged our players to show up in the second half and go one step better," he said. "Other than the first five minutes, when we were a little sluggish, we out-played them in the final 40 minutes."

Trinity Western keeper Kristen Funk made one save to preserve the shutout.
