Given a second chance, a local group of ball hockey players made the most of it.
The local Valley Ball Hockey Association squad defeated the Delta Giants 2-0 in the U19 championship game at the Western Challenge Cup in Calgary.
Delta had defeated Valley 2-1 in an earlier game, forcing Valley to the sidelines to watch Delta battle the Edmonton Royals.
And had the Royals won that game, Valley would have played for bronze instead of gold.
But after Delta won, it set up a rematch for Valley and the local squad did not disappoint.
Led by the play of goaltender Brad Anderson, who was spectacular in goal, stopping every shot thrown his way, Valley brought home the gold with the 2-0 victory.
Wes Grisedale opened the scoring and then Zach Lord set up Jesse Churchwell for another Valley goal. The team was up by a pair just six minutes in and Anderson took care of the rest, stopping all the Delta shots despite frequent pressure and odd-man rushes.
Grisedale, with four goals and four assists, and Churchwell, with three goals and four assists, were the top Valley scorers in the tournament.
Anderson was the tournament’s top goalie with two shutouts, a 1.20 goals against average and a .952 save percentage.
Valley went 3-1 in the round robin, edging the Royals 3-2, shutting out the Surrey Scorpions 4-0 and hammering the Edmonton Rascalz 8-1. The lone setback was the 3-1 loss to Delta.
The U19 Valley squad consists of: Brad Anderson, Eddy McKnight, Grahame Scott, Nick Prokopchuk, Nic Lakey, Josh Hunter, Steve Hudon, Mitch Miller, Wes Grisedale, Jesse Chuchwell, Zach Lord, Chris Johnson, Cam Belansky, Danny Zillich, Liam Dillon, Justin Reddick, Cody McKeown and Brockton McIntosh.
The team is coached by Jamie Wright, Simon Wright and Gary Aulakh.
In addition to the success of the U19 squad, other Valley teams also fared very well at the tournament.
Two squads won bronze, while another two teams lost heartbreakers in overtime to finish fourth.
The Valley Venom (U14) squad went 4-2 in the round robin and wound up with the bronze medal.
The team defeated the Edmonton Junior Oilers 4-1 in the third place game. The Venom had lost 4-2 in the semifinals against the Edmonton Sharks and beat the Ridge Meadows Renegades 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
Brandon Kennedy led the team in goals (five) and points (seven) while Brett Coats-Weidemann led in assists (five).
Wade Brenner and Kelsey Sanders split the goaltending duties, each going 2-1.
In the U12 division, the Valley Heat went 5-2 en route to the bronze medal.
The Heat burned the Surrey Scorpions 4-1 in the third-place game.
The team beat the Edmonton Junior Oilers 7-0 in the quarter-finals, but fell 3-2 in the semifinals to the Delta Giants.
Trevor Mainman (seven goals, two assists), Matt MacDonald (six goals, three assists) and Cole Wynn (two goals, seven assists) all finished tied for third in the scoring race.
Kyle Sagert was solid in goal, posting a 2.43 average and .852 save percentage.
The Valley Reapers suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss, 5-4 to Ridge Meadows in the U10 bronze medal game.
The Reapers went 2-3 in the tournament.
Noah Owens (eight goals, one assist) and Edward Betts (one goal, eight assists) teamed up to be a lethal combo for the Reapers.
Braeden Deslauriers was also solid, finishing with three goals and four assists.
Aric Wolstenholme finished 2-1 with an impressive 2.33 goals against average and an .865 save percentage. He was second and third in the categories.
The U17 Valley Selects also suffered that same fate, losing 2-1 in overtime to the Delta Giants with the bronze medal on the line.
The Selects went 3-2-1-1 at the tournament.
They were led by Shane Carey, who had four goals, and Mitchell Van Geel, who was tops in assists and points, with seven and 10, respectively.
Spencer Marro was solid in goal with a 3.21 goals against and an .878 save percentage.
