Silver for The Other Team
The Other Team won silver at the midget C fastpitch provincial championships.
It was a silver-medal performance for The Other Team at the zone 3 regional championships.
The Langley Fastball Association girls' midget C squad lost 4-1 in the championship game at Noel Booth Park against a very strong Mission team.
While the loss may have been a tough pill to swallow for the Langley team, it was a marked improvement from when the two foes hooked up in the semifinals just four hours earlier. In that game, Mission cruised to a 23-8 victory.
The Other Team did not let that crushing loss de-rail their hopes for a medal in the double knockout format, as the team rebounded by defeating the Langley Stealers to advance to the gold medal game.
The squad went 3-1 in the round robin to place second heading into the playoff round where they defeated Port Moody 7-3 in the quarter-finals.
The tournament began in great fashion for The Other Team as Ally Morrison mowed down the first three batters she faced en route to a solid six-inning performance, with Jessica Hemphill coming on in the seventh to close the game out for the save.
The two hurlers combined for seven strikeouts, while allowing just six hits.
The offence was paced by Randi Haberstock and Devon Chubey while Kathleen Dobray belted a two-run home run.
The second game was a rematch of the 2005 bantam age group regionals, when The Other Team defeated the Ridge Meadows Encore.
Alas, the 2009 edition of this rivalry went in favour of the Encore, who squeaked out a 6-5 victory, scoring the winning run on an extremely close play at the plate.
Jasmine Pinder, Casey Openshaw and Kristin Maki, who hammered a triple, led the offence.
Day two began with a victory, as the Langley squad downed Port Moody.
Dayna Ross and Susan Lott had solid games.
The Other Team really got their offence cranking in the next contest, a 16-1 destruction of Fleetwood.
Dobray, Openshaw, Hemphill and Ross all had doubles, while Haberstock and Morrison belted triples.
The win ensured Langley second spot going into the playoff round, and some well-deserved rest.
The Other Team, led by two runs from Baily Batkey, who displayed some impressive base running, advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 7-3 victory.
One of the highlights of the game was some great defence from infielders Emma Rogers and Alysha Mathew.
Facing a talented Mission squad, Langley fell behind early, surrendering a triple and a home run for an early deficit.
Haberstock did get one run back with a solo home run, but Mission proved to be too much as they cruised to a 23-8 victory.
Stephanie Poje was two-for-two at the dish, while Haberstock had two doubles to finish with three hits.
With the playoff format double knockout, The Other Team faced another Langley squad, the Sluggers, with the winner moving to the finals and the loser seeing their season end.
The Other Team showed no mercy against their friends, jumping out to a four-run lead and then hanging on against a late Sluggers rally.
Facing Mission once again, this time with the gold medal on the line, Langley proved to be a much more formidable foe this time around as they limited their opponent to just four runs. Unfortunately, The Other Team's offence could not get on track, crossing the plate just once.
