Ten K’s, one hit for Blaze hurler Wawrzasek
Ten strikeouts in six innings from Stosh Wawrzasek helped fuel the Langley Blaze to a 4-1 victory on Thursday night.
Langley was hosting the Fraser Valley Chiefs at McLeod Park in a battle for third place in the B.C. Premier U18 Baseball League.
The Blaze improved to 9-4, a half-game ahead of the 8-4 Chiefs.
Fraser Valley struck first as they scored their lone run in the third inning, taking advantage of a couple of walks and scoring despite still not having any hits in the game.
But in the bottom half, Kevin Lum scored Joe Germaine with an opposite field single and then the Blaze got two more as Lum and Nic Mahovolich scored on a couple of Fraser Valley errors.
Langley’s final run came in the fourth. After Carter Morrison led off with a double, Jake Chapman singled to bring in the fourth run.
Wawrzasek’s bid for a no-hitter was stopped in the fifth when Carney Chamberlain led off with a single. That would be the lone hit surrendered by the Blaze right-hander in six innings, with Mike Ellis pitching the seventh for the save.
Fraser Valley threatened in that inning with two runners on and the tying run at the plate.
But a strikeout and then a textbook 4-6-3 double play sealed the victory for the Blaze.
Langley has won four straight and seven of their past nine games.
The Blaze host the White Rock Tritons (4-11) in a doubleheader today (Sunday) at McLeod Park.
Game times are noon and 2:30 p.m.
