Someone must be responsible

Editor: After reading the front page of The Times (Sept. 11), the only thing I could do was let my jaw involuntarily drop. $8.3 million!

Throughout the article, I read phrases like “disturbing number of accounting errors,” “early indication of problems,” and “not a result of decisions made by the board.”

I guess the main question I have is this, “Who is ultimately responsible for this mess?”

I don’t ever want to hear that our school district leadership was not to blame for an $8.3 million budget shortfall. Where was the governance, the accountability, quality control, and reporting back — where was it?

I too am partly responsible for a budget and have people who work with me to make sure we all get our jobs done properly. If my people do their jobs poorly or worse: irresponsibly, then at the end of the day, someone’s going to ask: Who is at the helm of that ship?

My organization is substantially smaller than the school district, but our operating platforms are based upon similar principles (or at least I thought so). And to make matters worse, my organization depends heavily upon the Langley School District.

If I’m not willing to be the “last person standing” holding account when my organization has made grievous errors, then I shouldn’t be its leader. I’ll end my rant here, as I’m positive other citizens will be sounding off as well in the next paper.

By the way, my organization’s name? It’s called the Hurst family.

Martin Hurst,

Brookswood
