Local food banks operate through generosity

Editor: Regarding the article appearing in the Aug. 21 edition of The Times headlined: ‘Grants on thin ice,’ Aldergrove-Fort Langley MLA Rich Coleman is quoted as saying “It’s going to be a wait and see, not an entitlement, we will protect grants to things like the food bank, that would score higher than others…”
I do not know which food bank Mr. Coleman is referring to, but I do know that the Langley and Aldergrove food banks have never received any government grants or funding of any kind whatsoever.
Our local food banks are 100 per cent supported by the generous and unsolicited donations of local businesses, schools, churches, community organizations and individuals.
Even though demand for food bank assistance is up 40 per cent over the past year, we are still able to meet the increasing need for help through the generosity of this community, without any provincial or local government funding.
