A home that once housed the mayor of Langley City, was thought to have once been a brothel or speakeasy, and was also the subject of a contentious family dispute is no more.
The house, located at 196 Street and 60 Avenue, burned late Saturday night.
As recently as one month ago, the infamous house was home to as many as 20 tenants with nowhere else to go, but it was shut down June 5 because of several fire-related safety concerns and the current owner's inability to rectify them.
At around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, Langley City Fire Rescue was called to a massive fire in the now-abandoned house.
"We have approximately 25 firefighters on scene, three pumpers, an aerial ladder, a rescue and a command unit," said Langley City Fire Chief Bruce Dundas. "This is a defensive fire only, it's unsafe to put our people in it.
"As this is an abandoned building, we felt it was unsafe to risk any firefighters' lives."
