The Langley Events Centre wants to be able to serve booze until 1 or 2 a.m.

Township council has agreed to a public hearing on whether or not to allow the entire establishment to fall under the same liquor licence.

Currently, the bistro and banquet hall holds a food primary licence, but alcohol can be served in the stadium at events and games, except for when Trinity Western University teams are playing.

Councillor Kim Richter questioned who would be drinking alcohol that late at night when games and concerts end earlier than 2 a.m.

Township manager Mark Bakken said the reason is for weddings and banquets that may go past 1 a.m.

Langley RCMP report that police have been called to the LEC on several occasions to deal with intoxicated people.

“There has been evidence of over consumption of alcohol by some of the patrons in attendance [since the opening.] It is unclear if the observed inebriation was directly tied to the service of alcohol at the Events Centre,” said Insp. Richard Konarski.

The Langley RCMP will support the application with the applicant adhering to the liquor control act.
