Langley father Brian Elidoros is speaking out, including personally serving papers to Township Mayor Rick Green, after his daughter and her friend were beaten by a mob of 13 and 14-year-olds at the parking lot of George Preston Recreation Centre two weeks ago.

Elidoros, a Langley resident, is suing the Township for the lack of lighting and public safety at the facility.

“I want this to be a wake-up call before someone gets killed. Hopefully, this won’t be an ‘I told you so,’” he said.

One 14-year-old girl is facing an assault charge in relation to the brawl and attack that sent Elidoros’ daughter to hospital, confirmed Cpl. Holly Marks. Langley RCMP said a police officer arrived to find a group of about 60 kids gathered near the skatepark around 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 25.

Brian’s two daughters and their two friends said they were going to the nearby 7-Eleven when they decided to see if someone they knew was at the outdoor party outside the rec centre that night.

Not knowing anyone there, the teens intended to leave but then one 14-year-old girl punched Elidoros’ daughter, who is also 14, in the face while a large crowd gathered around to watch, he said.

The victim, in front of her sister and friends, was beaten up by a swarm of kids, started by this 14-year-old.

The group beat the victim, punching her in the head, stomping on her ankles and kicking at her when she was down, said Elidoros’ daughter in her statement to police. Only one girl, the instigator, is facing charges.

A young man who was with the victim was also beaten up for trying to help.

Elidoros said his daughter didn’t know the kids who beat her up. He alleges many of the kids hanging out drinking and doing drugs that night were from Brookswood Secondary and Langley Secondary and are aged 13 and 14.

“Do parents know where their 13-year-old kids are?

“It’s not 19-year-olds partying there.”

He has spoken to Brookswood’s principal about the partying at George Preston and nearby Noel Booth Park and the ongoing fighting and intoxication, he said.

“I heard a similar fight had taken place there the weekend before. It could escalate, it could end up with a kid being killed, and I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t warn parents about what’s going on,” said Elidoros.

Elidoros’ daughter managed to run away from the crowd who was chasing her and flag down a motorist, said police.

“That random motorist picked her up and brought her to safety while calling police,” said Marks. She was picked up by ambulance and taken to Langley Memorial.

Meanwhile, Elidoros’ other daughter had called 911.

Elidoros said he arrived at the hospital to find his daughter black and blue. She had a black eye, swollen mouth and had pain in her legs and stomach where she had been kicked. She is going to be OK, but is emotionally shaken.

Elidoros alleged teens posted pictures of the fight on Facebook. He took down the names of the teens who posted the images. The pictures are no longer posted, he said.

“I’m going this far because kids shouldn’t feel like they can get away with it or they’ll do it again,” he said. He’s already been to the alleged attacker’s house to speak to her mother and to her, and to serve them with legal papers. The accused teen did apologize both to him and to his daughter for the fight, he said.

From what he understands, this isn’t the first fight to take place at the popular teen hang out in the past few weeks, nor is it this mob’s first fight.

“It’s so dark there. It’s a public safety issue. It’s not only kids up there, it’s people curling and attending events who might stumble on this type of thing,” he said.

Last June, a 13-year-old boy and a group of friends rode their bikes to the Brookswood skate park at George Preston Recreation Centre to ride around on BMX bikes, as they often do after dinner. This time, a fight broke out and the young boy was mistaken for someone else. He was badly beaten.

“This is a Township-built community centre and park. These parks are for our children to enjoy safely. Shouldn’t the Township want to ensure their property can be enjoyed by everyone, not to be taken over by druggies and violent teens?” the victim’s father said at the time.

He even offered to pay for security cameras. At the time, police said they were looking into safety issues there and Brookswood merchants held a town hall meeting about crime issues.

Green said he hadn’t been made aware of the assault but would comment about it after speaking with Langley RCMP.

“This is very disappointing,” he said. “But, I can’t comment further until I speak with the inspector.”
