Sex trade workers' murder case moves forward
The man accused of killing two sex trade workers was back in court on Wednesday.
Davey Mato Butorac, 30, appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster for a pre-trial conference, which was adjourned to Oct. 30.
Typically, this involves a meeting between the judge, Crown and defence lawyers to narrow issues in a case, and to agree on what will be presented and who will appear as witnesses.Butorac, of Aldergrove, has been charged with the second degree murder of Sheryl Lynn Korrol, 50, of Langley, and 46-year-old Gwendolyn Jo Lawton of Abbotsford.
Korrol’s body was discovered in an industrial area off Mufford Crescent on July 7, 2007. Four months earlier, on March 13, municipal employees stumbled across Lawton’s remains off a gravel road in Abbotsford.
At the time of his arrest on Jan. 4, 2008, Butorac was living with his father in an Aldergrove townhouse.
He had been placed under surveillance before being arrested by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
IHIT also indicated that Butorac may be linked to other murders, but no further charges have been laid.
A preliminary hearing, which establishes if there is sufficient evidence for a trial to proceed, was held last November. As with all such hearings, a publication ban on those proceedings remains in effect.
