Rules apply to burning permits

Outdoor burning, even with a permit, can land residents in hot water with the local fire department if they’re not following the rules.

Even though it is burning season, that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all, said Township fire department spokesperson Pat Walker.

On the back side of every burning permit, guidelines are laid out, he said, including proper hours, pile size and materials for burning.

Residents may only burn materials that are indigenous to the property, said Walker, not items that have been brought in from other areas. The fire may not contain construction materials.

Fines can run as high as $500 and multiple tickets may be issued for the same property if it is found more than one guideline is being broken.
