For 23 years, Bob Andrews has worked for the Township of Langley.

During that time, he has seen a lot of changes — different mayors and councils, growth in the community, the introduction of new technology.

But there is one thing that has not changed over time: the generous spirit of his co-workers and their willingness to give to those in need.

For many years, employees at the Township of Langley have been raising money for children, seniors, and people in the community who need help, through an annual campaign that collects donations for the United Way of the Lower Mainland.

Andrews is chair of the Township’s United Way Committee, a group of municipal employees from various departments who have volunteered their time to plan the 2009 campaign.

This year, the team is encouraging the public to get on board and help out through a number of fun, fundraising events.

“In the past, Township staff has generously donated about $30,000 annually to the United Way,” Andrews said.

“In these difficult economic times, every dollar makes a difference in someone’s life, and we hope others might want to give, too. We would appreciate any support the community would like to offer.”

The United Way provides funding to social services and programs throughout the Lower Mainland, and from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, the Township will hold its 2009 United Way Campaign to help support those efforts.

The week will feature events for staff which include a fundraising breakfast at the Murrayville Pub, and inspirational presentations from some of the programs that benefit from the United Way in Langley, including those offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters, Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities, Langley Community Services Society, and Langley Hospice Society.

The public is invited to join in on the campaign on Monday, Sept. 28, when a lunchtime barbecue is held at the Civic Facility, 20338 65 Ave. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Township staff and residents can purchase a hamburger, drink, and chips for a minimum cash donation of $5, and all proceeds will go to the United Way.

“If you are in the area doing your shopping or running errands, or are coming to the Civic Facility for business, please make a point of stopping in, having lunch, and helping to raise money for the United Way,” said Andrews.

As well, the public is invited to a book sale that will be held by The Book Guy at the Civic Facility throughout the day on Monday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Ten per cent of all sales will be donated to the United Way
