A 32-year-old Surrey woman is facing charges for allegedly plotting to kill her ex-husband with the help of two hit men who have Vancouver gang ties.

The Vancouver Police Department announced Friday that it was during ongoing investigations of gang activity in late August that officers uncovered the wife's plan to have her former spouse killed.

Liza Joylene Belcourt has been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit murder. The alleged hit men, Port Coquitlam's Jordon Joseph Doiron, 23, and David Dean Laidlaw, 39, of Langley, are also charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Insp. Brad Desmarais of the Vancouver Police Department's gangs and drug section said while it might be common knowledge that gangsters hire contract killers to eliminate their rivals, it is "less well known that these gang hit men can be also hired by members of the public, who may have only peripheral gang connections themselves, but do harbour a death wish for someone else."

Police said they developed "an elaborate safety plan" to ensure the well-being of the ex-husband once the conspiracy was discovered. They added, however, that he was extremely shaken up when advised of the plot and requested his name and location not be disclosed.
