Meredith will have some new digs in the coming years, now that the Greater Vancouver Zoo has pledged to create a new bald eagle enclosure.

Last Thursday, on the zoo’s 39th anniversary, staff held a ground breaking ceremony for the new facility which will be able to house four injured bald eagles, including resident bald eagle Meredith.

Meredith is the resident rescued bald eagle who arrived at the zoo 23 years ago, after being struck by a large truck on the highway and left for dead.

The zoo veterinarian treated Meredith’s injuries, but even after extensive rehabilitation; unfortunately it was determined that she would never be able to fly again.

“With the constant development of land for human population, some eagles fall victim to road accidents, power line injuries or other human related threats,” said the zoo’s Jody Henderson. “A great number of these disabled eagles would be euthanized as there are very few facilities to house them.”

Another component of the bald eagle enclosure will be to educate young people on why these massive, majestic birds are such an important part of B.C.’s ecosystem.

The zoo is hoping to have the enclosure finished before 2010.
