Canada’s best junior aged baseball players will battle it out at McLeod Park for the next six days.

At stake is a spot at the Little League World Series in Taylor, Mich. later this month.

The top teams from around the country began play yesterday (Thursday) at the Canadian junior (13/14) national baseball championships, being hosted by the Langley Baseball Association.

The association successfully bid on hosting the major event to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Langley Baseball.

B.C. is well represented at the six-team tournament, with the Langley All-Stars and the Coquitlam All-Stars taking part.

Langley did not have to go through the rigorous qualifying process, while Coquitlam, the defending national champions for this age group, represent B.C. as the provincial champs.

And the team Coquitlam beat in last year’s final, Medicine Hat’s Midwest Surveys Mets, is back for another go as the Prairie champions.

Representing Ontario will be the Windsor South Canadians, who did not earn their spot at nationals until Tuesday afternoon.

The Quebec champs are the Notre Dame de Grace (Montreal) Lynx.

And representing the Maritimes is Nova Scotia’s Sydney Mines Junior Ramblers.

Games go all weekend, with the top four making the playoffs on Tuesday.

Canada’s champion will be crowned on Wednesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
