Three Langley men charged in connection with two brutal Langley crimes, including murder, made appearances in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey on Thursday.

One of the men, Albert Jacob Jackman is charged in both crimes. He is charged with first-degree murder in the March 28 stabbing death of Kyle Barber, of Aldergrove; and assault-related charges in a beating and sledgehammer attack on Tyler Willock on March 8.

Jackman, 22, dressed in a red remand centre jumpsuit, accompanied his similarly- attired co-accused in the Willock assault— Wesley Edward Kelemen — in the prisoners’ box. Both remain in custody.

In the Willock assault, Kelemen faces one count of aggravated assault, while Jackman faces counts of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement.

In the murder of Kyle Barber, 24, a second accused, Gregory Michael Barrett, 30, is charged with second-degree murder.

Barrett, who was released June 11 after posting a $100,000 surety, wore a crisp blue open-necked dress shirt, dark rimmed glasses and beige dress pants, when he entered the court room to take a seat beside his defence counsel.

The hearing was brief, and the matter was set over again, to July 17.

One of the victims in these two cases, Kyle Barber, died from multiple stab wounds.

Barber had been stabbed at around 11 p.m. after a fight broke out inside a house he was believed to have been living in, in the 24400 block of Fraser Highway.

Neighbours called 911 after hearing a woman crying frantically.

Jackman, charged in both cases, sported a short black beard and close cropped hair in court on Thursday. According to the B.C. Integrated Gang Task Force (BCIGTF), both Jackman and Kelemen are associates of the Red Scorpions criminal organization, and the Bacon brothers.

On March 8, Langley RCMP responded to a report of a serious assault on Willock at a home in the 21000 block of 86 Avenue.

Due to the severity and extent of Willock’s injuries, Langley major crime investigators were also called in.

Based on their investigation and collaboration with the BCIGTF, it was determined that there were significant links between the attack on Willock and on-going gang task force investigations, Sgt. Shinder Kirk told The Times.

Willock had earlier been targeted, in a drive-by shooting Feb. 16 outside a Surrey strip club. The Range Rover he was a passenger in was hit by bullets, and one man inside was shot. The vehicle got as far as Fraser Highway and 216 Street. The shooting victim was then taken to Langley Memorial Hospital, and survived.

Five people linked to the United Nations gang were arrested and are facing charges.
