The eighth fatality on Langley's roads occurred on Saturday evening, but details of the hit-and-run cannot be released after a lawyer won a publication ban.

A two-vehicle crash occurred in the 21000 block of 48 Avenue at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. Less than 12 hours later, police arrested a man in connection with the fatal crash, said Langley RCMP spokesman Cpl. Peter Thiessen.

Corey Michael Elliott, 33, was arrested at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday morning, and has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Elliott was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in Surrey on May 13.

Thiessen said a Justice of the Peace granted the ban on publication of details during a bail hearing.

The motorist who died has been identified as Noel Desrochers, 62, of Langley. Desrochers was the only occupant of a 1979 Ford Fairmont involved in the two-car collision.

The fatal crash occurred three weeks after a 64-year-old Delta woman died in a two-car collision at the intersection of 200 Street and 32 Avenue.

A ninth road death is being investigated by the provincial Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. It involves the death of Silas O'Brien, 21, who was run down by a hit-and-run driver at about 2:30 a.m. on March 13.

Police believe that the vehicle in which O'Brien and two friends were traveling westbound on 16 Avenue, was forced off the road by the driver of a Ford pickup truck.

O'Brien and his friends made it safely out of their vehicle after it ended up in a ditch. Police allege that the pickup driver then turned around and deliberately drove into the three men, striking O'Brien. His friends managed to jump to safety.

Police seized the pickup, interviewed the driver and his passenger, but have laid no charges in the case which they say could take several months to investigate.
