Inspired by the B.C. Children Hospital’s Kourageous Kids Calendar, and a courageous kid she had met in her own neighbourhood, Nuala Adderly of the Langley Quilters’ Guild came to her group asking them to do something really special.

Adderly asked her guild’s members to create quilts for each child or family that had drawn a picture displayed in the 2009 kids calendar, each quilt incorporating pictures from their drawings.

She had bought a calendar from six-year-old cancer survivor Emma Sheepwash who bravely sold them at the Walnut Grove Save On Foods.

Immediately, guild members were enthusiastically signing up, following the rule that the quilt must have part of the child’s drawing.

Adderly’s quilt included bordered themes that her child artist listed in his biography.

“The artist whose drawing I took on stated in his bio that he was a ‘jet pilot,’ a karate expert and was four years old.

All the quilters donated their own fabric into their creations, resulting in quilts coming from the heart.

That heart put into these pieces of cozy art were handed out personally last month at a special event in the playroom of the oncology ward at the Children’s Hospital.

Quilters got to meet the children and families and were moved by the resilience and courage each of these children and parents showed, said Adderly.

The experience was so moving that quilters are already lining up to do next year’s calenders. Future plans include a showing of the quilts and the children’s artwork together in galleries, with the idea to raise funds for the B.C. Children’s Hospital.
