Girls Choir to sing at Olympic
Updated: September 01, 2009 3:28 PM
For the singers of the British Columbia Girls Tour Choir, this past summer was a dream come true.
Imagine singing in medieval castles, 1,000-year-old cathedrals and tiny country churches. And there were plenty of shows and sightseeing days as well . . . and shopping — this is a girls choir, after all.
After months of preparation, the girls travelled for three weeks to Scotland, England and Germany and sang at 11 events from a repertoire of over 30 pieces of music: from sacred and classical to Canadian and Scottish folk songs; show tunes and even salsa and hip-hop dance pieces.
BC Girls Choir was the only North American representative at the Touch the Future Choir Festival in Germany, where they sang with five European choirs.
Highlights for this season will be appearances at Olympic festivities in February and the recording of a new CD. And there will be all the usual camps and concerts, festivals and fun.
Girls come from all over the Lower Mainland. The choir offers two rehearsal locations and five choir levels to suit ages five to 18. With the Golden Ears Bridge now open, the Maple Ridge rehearsal venue is only minutes away from those who live in Walnut Grove, other areas of Langley as well as the Cloverdale and Guildford areas.
Under the directorship of recording artist, classical singer and music educator Fiona Blackburn, any girl who wants to improve her singing, get a lot of stage experience and train for international performing tours, should contact Lynn at the BC Girls Choir office: 604-542-1698
Auditions in New Westminster: Wednesday, Sept. 2, 3:30-8 p.m. Auditions in Maple Ridge: Tuesday, Sept. 8, 5-8 p.m.
