Downtown Langley City will be filled with a riot of shapes and sounds and colours, not to mention plenty of creative energy on Saturday, Aug. 15 as the 16th annual Arts Alive festival kicks off on the Fraser Highway one-way.

The outdoor festival has been a tradition in Langley City since 1994, and has grown and changed from one summer to the next, with this year’s event promising to be another record-breaker, said Courtney Sitoski, Downtown Langley Merchants Association events co-ordinator.

“It’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”

“It seems to increase by 1,000 or 2,000 each year,” agreed DLMA’s Teri James.

The number of artists participating is always on the rise as well, she noted.

“We have about 130 artists this year. We’re tucking them in all over the place.”

Arts Alive has always been about promoting local talent, said James. This year, roughly 70 per cent of the people taking part are based in the Lower Mainland, but there are several from other parts of the province, as well, including Salmon Arm, Kelowna and Vancouver Island.

Participants will demonstrate their techniques in a wide variety of mediums, from painting to sculpting, pottery, silver, jewelry and glass.

Musical offerings are equally diverse, with jazz, acoustic guitar and old time rock music being performed on three stages.

Happening in conjunction with Arts Alive will be a children’s fun park, where younger visitors will have a chance to try their hand at a bit of drawing and painting.

Arts Alive celebrations take place Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Fraser Highway one-way, between 204 and 206 Streets. Visit www.downtownlangley.com.
