It was all pride and cheers for Alana McGinn of Langley and her family, as she received a scholarship from Coast Capital Savings in recognition of her success in balancing academics with strong community involvement, while dealing with personal adversity.
The scholarships, which are offered each year by the credit union to B.C. students, include 32 citizenship awards valued at $2,000 each for individuals who have achieved a strong balance between school and personal activities and demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.
Another 15 students who have overcome significant life challenges and achieved personal growth received Coast Capital’s Standing Tall Awards worth $5,000 each.
“It’s a great honour to be recognized in this way by Coast Capital Savings,” said McGinn, who received the credit union’s Standing Tall Award. “I have worked very hard to keep school and community involvement a priority even through the hardest times. To know that the hard work is paying off is obviously a welcome pat on the back.”
Coast Capital Savings received more than 1,150 applications this year and as always, the calibre of the applications showed the incredible skills, hard work and diversity of young British Columbians.
“Coast Capital is committed to fostering tomorrow’s leadership through various initiatives such as internships on our Youth Team and our annual education awards,” said Bill Wellburn, chair of the Coast Capital Savings board. “We salute the accomplishments of each of these individuals.”
This year Coast Capital presented a total of 47 scholarships totalling $139,000 to deserving students from several communities across B.C.
Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s second largest credit union with total assets under administration of $12.3 billion, more than 400,000 members and 50 branches in the Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island regions of B.C.
