Gravel operators fund green projects

A Langley gravel pit operator is working with Douglas College to fund green initiatives throughout Metro Vancouver.
Rempel Bros. Concrete, a long time supporter of the College’s Institute of Urban Ecology, recently donated $5,000 to support its work. Rempel is part of a consortium of Metro Vancouver gravel companies that includes Allard Contractors, Jack Cewe Ltd., LaFarge Canada and Mainland Sand and Gravel, that supports the education and restoration work of the Institute.
Donations made by the gravel pit operators are matched by the Real Estate Foundation of BC.
Director Dr. Rob McGregor says IUE works throughout Metro Vancouver on a variety of urban ecology projects, from monitoring of insect biodiversity in urban forests, assessment of the effects of human activity on migratory waterfowl, to planting of native plants to increase the activity of beneficial insects, the use of predatory insects for management of greenhouse pests and an extensive program of environmental education workshops to Metro Vancouver schools and community groups.
“We are grateful for the continuing support of IUE by the pit operators. Their support of our endowment facilitates our work on the ecology of urban areas,” McGregor says.
“Gravel pits often get a bad rap,” says Hazel Postma, the College’s associate vice-president external relations.
“However, the pit operators who support the IUE are committed to our environmental initiatives. In addition, the pit operators consult and collaborate with IUE regarding habitat restoration on their sites.”
