They were a few players down – thanks to the flu and prior vacation plans.
There were also some snow.
But that didn't stop the Cloverdale from winning the 2009 Junior Bantam division nine-man provincial championship game in Kamloops Saturday Nov. 14.
The Cougars managed a 54-19 win against the Vanderhoof Vikings, capping off a perfect season .
Antonio Mendoza earned the game's Most Valuable Player award, leading the Cougars on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 447 yards and seven touchdowns, and also kicked three converts for another six points. Mendoza was also Cloverale's top tackler on defence.
Ahad Fayaz completed the Cougars scoring with a touchdown. Other standouts on offence included Liam Kelly, Landon Wisheart, Ben Ingvaldson and Reece Russell.
Russell and Fayaz were prominent on defence as well, as both recovered fumbles.
Also contributing to the championship, and a perfect 11-0 (won-loss) season, were Gage Morton, Jomari Gaza, Bryce Telford, Matt Bahi, Alex Mack, Zach Blouin and Riley Nagy.
