An athlete from Cloverdale helped his teammates paddle their dragon boat to a solid-gold victory at this year’s B.C. Seniors Games in Richmond.

Dave St. Laurent, a member of the Fraser Valley Sterling Dragons, and his teammates sailed home with a gold medal after winning the championship race in the mixed 55-plus category Sept. 18.

Eleven mixed teams representing B.C. zones took part in the event, held at the John MS Lecky UBC Boathouse as part of the 2009 B.C. Seniors’ Games. Preliminary dragonboat races got underway Sept. 17, with finals Sept. 18.

The Fraser Valley sent three dragon boat teams to the games: two mixed teams; the FV Sterling Dragons and FLCC FORTified, and one women’s team, the FV Power Surge.

The Seniors Games were held Sept. 15 to 19 at various sports venues across Richmond, including the new Richmond Olympic Oval.

More than 3,800 athletes turned out for competition, plus another 1,300 volunteers, making it one of the largest athletic gatherings in B.C. and rivaling the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics in terms of the number of athletic participants.

Cloverdale sent another athlete to this year’s Seniors Games – Ken McCormack, a member of a mixed 55-plus Slo Pitch team.

Seniors’ Games participants are aged 55 years and older, and have qualified for teams representing 12 regional zones across B.C.
