Make your home unattractive to thieves
Updated: July 30, 2009 3:05 PM
With the warm weather upon us, our office is noting an increase in property crime related to residents dropping their guard in their attempts to cool down.
Whether they have left their garage doors open, their car or home windows open or their patio doors open, thieves are taking the opportunity to easily steal wallets, keys and other small items that are left near the open entrances.
Be aware that these crimes are frequently occurring when the homeowner is at home, and their safety is compromised.
There is never a good season to let down your guard on Crime Prevention.
When the summer hits, and we open up our homes, we need to be extra vigilant.
There are many products available that can help you to open up your home, but still ensure that your property is secure and your safety is intact.
A few examples are:
Patios and Windows:
Key operated locks
Doweling installed in the frame (about 3/8” diameter for a patio)
Metal mesh screens to prevent thieves from seeing any valuables inside
Install a screw with its head protruding about 1/4” in the upper track (on the closed side) to make it impossible for the window to be lifted off its track
Consider installing decorative bars on any basement windows that present an additional challenge
Ensure ladders and other tools are locked away to avoid having this items used to gain entry into your home
Doors and Garages:
Always keep doors shut and locked when you are not there
Install deadbolts with a 3” throw
Unplug garage doors that are not in regular use
DO NOT store your garage door opener in your vehicle
Vehicles:
Do not leave windows open or doors unlocked
DO NOT leave valuables (including your garage door opener) in your vehicle
Install at least 1 anti theft device
This is a very short list of the many things that you can do to keep yourself and your property safe.
