Low budget vamp flick vanishes

By all reports, it was a stinker, but it was a locally-shot stinker.
Surrey residents who enjoy spotting familiar landmarks playing backdrop on the silver screen had to act fast if they wanted to check out gross-out comedy Stan Helsing, a new movie spoof released last month.
The film, originally scheduled to be a direct-to-DVD release only, ended up being released on Oct. 23, just in time for Halloween. But immediately vanished from local screens.
It's not surprising; the reviews for the low-budget made-in-B.C. parody, which follows the pot-addled exploits of a stoned, vampire-hunting video store employee, weren't very good.
Apparently, even master of the deadpan gag, Leslie Nielsen, who appears in a cameo role, couldn't save it.
"The bathroom sequence sets the tone for the entire film, which makes bodily functions its raison d'etre," The Georgia Straight wrote in its recent review.
The film stars Steve Howey of TVs Reba as a descendant of Van Helsing, the famed vampire killer, who takes on Freddy, Jason, Pinhead, Leatherface, Chucky and Michael Myers. It also stars Kenan Thompson of SNL fame.
According to IMDB.com, filming locations included exterior shots of Cloverdale and the Tall Timbers golf course, Pitt Meadows, and Vancouver.
