The Fraser Valley Avalanche, the new National Ringette League (NRL) women’s team based in Langley, has given permission to a local youth team to use their name logo.
The newly formed youth team, the Junior Fraser Valley Avalanche, is part of the Fraser Valley Ringette Association and will be representing the Fraser Valley in the under-12 age category at ringette games all over the lower mainland, as well as at tournaments around the province for the 2009/2010 season.
“We were thrilled that a local team wanted to share our name and logo,” said NRL Avalanche owner Bill Bettles. “Part of our vision is to work with the community and local youth teams. We look forward to having a group of young athletes to work with and act as role models to.”
The Fraser Valley Avalanche is currently the only team representing British Columbia in the Nation Ringette League and is the first independently owned and operated team in the NRL. The owner, Bil Bettles, has a history of sports administration and elite athlete development in B.C. Ringette, women’s ice hockey, and softball. After watching both the successes and challenges his three daughters faced through their sporting careers, Bettles’ mandate is to promote and encourage growth and participate in female sport, while providing a venue for these elite athletes to showcase their talents, without barriers.
“Investing in ringette is investing in the health and wellbeing of female athletes in our province,” said Bettles. “I am proud to be able to offer opportunities for success to these women and all of the youth athletes who will follow behind them.”
“Our team is very excited to have a great logo, a great name, and a great team of elite athletes to look up to,” said John Campbell, coach of the Junior Fraser Valley Avalanche. “We look forward with the NRL Avalanche team from time to time, and plan to cheer them on at their games as often as possible. Our entire team is ready for a great season of ringette.”
The Junior Fraser Valley Avalanche team has already played two regular season games, with a 2-0 record. The team is part of the Fraser Valley Ringette Association, home to players from Langley, Aldergrove and Abbotsford and further east.
