Aldergrove United Soccer Club came home from the B.C. Seniors Games with the gold medal in the over-60 division.

The 21st Seniors Games were held in Richmond, September 17-20 and were a huge success. Aldergrove spokesman John Jones said “full credit goes to the city of Richmond, the seniors games executive, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the 1,300 volunteers who made the games a success.”

Some 4,000 seniors from all over the province competed in the 30 sporting an recreational events. All these events were held at many different venues in Richmond, including the new Olympic speed skating oval, which was “well worth seeing,” according to Jones.

Aldergrove United Soccer Club was the Zone 3 Fraser Valley representative for the over-60 soccer division and Chilliwack was the over-55 division.

Aldergrove repeated their 2008 Seniors Games gold medal performance this year. Aldergrove won three games against Prince George, North Island and Central Island, before tying South Island to put them into the gold medal game. Aldergrove defeated Vancouver Selects 2-1 for their second gold medal in a row.

Aldergrove team included Ron Price, Irwin Thurmber, Dieter Hiblerer, Manny Soucher, Dennis Cain, John Jones, Robin Goldham, Rene Walters, Doug Smith, Reid McDonald, Glen Clark, Herb Joe, Ziggy Gohringer, Udo Wachter, Rudy Gamboa, Wolfgang Degman, Fred Ewert, Dave Porter, Phil Cruickshank, Sergio Guierro and Jerry Nichele.

Chilliwack won silver in the over-55 division soccer championship.
