B.C. is Canada’s best.
That was made clear at the U17 Baseball Canada Cup tournament played in Kinderley, Sask.
The B.C. squad edged Quebec 7-6 in the gold medal game.
Trailing 5-4 after five innings, B.C. struck for three runs in the top of the sixth to claim the lead for good.
The local team received key contributions from a trio of locals on the squad, as Langley’s Jeremy Filipek, Nic Mahovlich and Mike Ellis were all on the roster.
The trio are also members of the Langley Blaze Premier team.
Mahovlich came up with a clutch hit in the semifinals. With the score tied at one against Alberta, a runner on second base and two outs, with extra innings looming, Mahovlich ripped a single to centre-field to score the winning run.
B.C. went 7-1 with wins over Ontario (2-1), Quebec (2-0 and 12-2), New Brunswick (11-4 and 10-0) and Alberta (2-1).
The team’s lone loss was 4-3 against Ontario.
And Aldergrove’s Bob Foerster helped Team BC win bronze at the junior championships held in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.
B.C. edged the host team 4-3 to finish atop the podium. B.C. had lost 2-1 to the eventual gold medal winners, Team Quebec, in the semifinals.
B.C. went 4-0 in the round robin.
