The Fox and Hound Giants Senior Men's Baseball team has completed their sixth season in the Lower Mainland Baseball League. The Giants finished the year with a record of 11-5 and third place in the tough Bill Mathers Division.
The Giants had a very tough second half schedule which saw them play six of eight against the league's top teams. The Giants managed to split their last eight games, winning four and losing four.
The Giants this year had to rely on each player to step up and play several positions. The year started off with Trevor Cieszecki going on the injured list for five games and then at the end of the year starting pitcher Jacob Harder has missed the last three games due to an injury suffered at the Provincial A Ball Hockey championship.
Jacob lead the pitching staff with a record of 4-2-1, newcomer Robin Fuller pitched great when counted on and finished with a record of 3-1-1. Veteran Trevor C went 2-2 and Brad Nedimovich won the last game of the year to finish up 1-0. Trevor Kuby pitched 21 innings this year, his most ever, and Spencer Takacs and Mark Reid got some relief innings in to join the pitching staff.
The Giants' offence had a team batting average of 328 and managed to score on average nine runs per game while allowing six. The offensive was lead by Trevor Kuby who had an outstanding year at the plate. Trevor slugged out 30 hits in 58 at bats for a 517 average and he also walloped four homers.
Next was Jacob Harder hitting a solid 381, Gavin McLeod was third at 379, and lead-off hitter Jordan Fatkin hit 370. Number two man Dan Kivinen hit 318, veteran Mark Reid hit 346. Domingo Guarenas struggled at the start of the year but turned it around to hit 308. Brad Nedimovich hit 298 with two dingers. Fleetfooted Spencer Takacs has come on strong and closed out the season with a 295 batting average, and despite his injury Trevor Cieszecki still managed to hit 281. Newcomers Robin Fuller finished at 250 and Steve Borth hit 224; both players took some time to get adjusted to the league but are starting to hit their stride and have been solid additions to the team. Veteran Kris Armstrong missed some games to family commitments and finished at 211.
The Giants won their last game of the year and will open up the first round of playoffs at home on Sunday, August 23, 4 p.m. at South Aldergrove Ball Park.
The Giants would like to thank the Fox and Hound Pub for their sponsorship this year. This is the sixth season that the Fox has sponsored the Giants.
