One step forward, one step back

British Columbia recently took a big step forward in the quest for clean, renewable energy when the Bear Mountain wind park near Dawson Creek began delivering electricity to BC Hydro’s power grid.
But just 10 days before the Bear Mountain wind turbines started turning, the B.C. Utilities Commission decided to push British Columbia several steps backward with their ill-considered decision to substantially increase the use of Port Moody’s Burrard Thermal power generating station. In so doing, the B.C. Utilities Commission essentially cancelled out, nearly nine times over, the progress that the Bear Mountain wind park represents.
British Columbia has a reputation for leading the world in clean, renewable electricity. We should be shining a light on the green path we’ve laid down so that others can follow.
But thanks to the B.C. Utilities Commission, and their backward-thinking Burrard Thermal decision, British Columbia now risks becoming the new poster child for brown energy.
