Chrissy Black comes from Maple Ridge to shop at Langley’s Wal-Mart store, and is enthusiastic that the store will expand to have a large grocery department. She says that will make it even easier for her to do one-stop shopping with sons Keithan, 2, and Grayson, 5.

Wal-Mart shoppers will soon be getting a whole new megastore, including the addition of a grocery department.

At Monday night’s meeting, Township council approved a development permit for a 26,000 square foot expansion to the south side of the store to accommodate the expanded grocery area.

The whole store is being renovated to become one of Wal-Mart’s super centres, similar to the South Surrey store.

No members of the public spoke about the application.

Mayor Rick Green asked if the expansion would impact parking.

But development planning staff said there is enough parking spaces as required for the entire SmartCentre complex. The expansion will see the loss of 210 parking spaces, but when Wal-Mart was originally built, there were more parking spaces than required.

A sidewalk will be added on 65 Avenue, making the area safer for walking.

Councillor Bob Long commented that he hopes traffic flow will be improved on 65 Avenue.
