'Traffic calming' coming to 32 Avenue

The Township is going to start implementing more traffic calming measures, including speed bumps, where necessary.
The top three locations eligible for traffic calming measures are:
• Willoughby Way from 197 Street to Wakefield Drive,
• 32 Avenue between 270 Street and 272 Street and
• Nash Street, between 88 Avenue and St. Andrews Street.
Before the policy was changed, traffic calming was only used at major parks and schools.
But council agreed that community consultation will be key to making the new policy work.
If traffic calming is being considered, a letter will be sent out to impacted residents to determine approval levels, followed by an open house.
Mayor Rick Green asked whether or not there is allowances to have neighbours help pay for the changes.
"Legislation is permissive to charging home owners to help pay but it would require more than 60 per cent approval by residents," said Township manager Mark Bakken.
Councillor Jordan Bateman said 60 per cent was too high and asked that it be changed to 50 per cent plus one for approval.
