Two car thieves were apprehended by Langley RCMP this week.

In the first case it was a follow-up to a hit and run investigation, after Langley RCMP attended a business in the 19800-block of 57A Avenue to investigate a hit and run Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

The complainant advised his vehicle had been parked in the parking lot and he observed a female driving a van back into his vehicle. He spoke with the driver who indicated she had no identification and drove away. Police checks confirmed the van had been stolen in Langley on September 27.

On Sept. 30 Langley RCMP Street Enforcement Unit attended the 5200-block of 208 Street to follow up reports of a suspicious vehicle. Officers observed the driver was alone in the vehicle and as the van began to move, one of the tires was deflated with a spike belt.

Officers followed the vehicle a short distance until it turned onto Maysfield Crescent and into a dead end. The van was left in some hedges at the front of a residential property and the driver ran on foot into a nearby ravine. Police established perimeters and called for a police dog to attend. The dog successfully located the driver in the muddy ravine.

The driver, a 18-year-old woman of no fixed address was arrested for possession of stolen property over $5,000. Police will be requesting she be held in custody. The investigation relating to the hit and run continues.

"Thanks to the co-ordinated efforts of uniformed police, plainclothes officers, Police Dog Services and members of our community, this incident was effectively concluded without any major mishaps," said Corporal Holly Marks.

In the other car theft case, just prior to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29 Langley RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit observed a 20-year-old Langley male who is well known to police driving a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle had been stolen earlier that morning in Langley. Officers requested the assistance of Air One which attended and followed the vehicle to a residence in the 19200-block of 68 Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle and approached the door of the residence.

Officers from Langley’s Street Enforcement Unit were soon on scene and knocked on the door of the residence. The driver answered the door and was promptly arrested for possession of stolen property over $5,000.
