Wettlaufer denied driver's licence

A sombre Surrey courtroom erupted in applause Friday when Provincial Court Judge William F. Stewart announced that Aldergrove resident Paul Thomas Wettlaufer’s application to overturn his 10-year driving ban would be denied.

Wettlaufer was found guilty in the 2003 hit-and-run crash that killed 13-year-old Carley Regan and was issued a 10-year prohibition from driving. Members of the Regan family and friends were on hand to hear the decision.

Barry Regan, Carley’s father, said the decision came as a relief to the family.

“It was like a big weight was just lifted off our shoulders,” he said. “Finally, it’s over and we don’t have to go in there again.”

Regan said the application drags Wettlaufer’s remorse into question.

“If he says he’s remorseful, why is he dragging us through this?” he asked.

Regan said the family is pleased Stewart upheld the driving ban.

“We’re happy he’s going to serve his full term,” he said. “The public will be safe for another four years.”

Regan said he isn’t convinced Wettlaufer will adhere to the prohibition, though.

“People have seen him driving,” he said. “The last time we were here in court, four days later he was seen driving a tow truck down 264th. He’s going to do it. He’s just got to get caught.”
