Bridge replacement closes 232 Street
Updated: August 13, 2009 1:18 PM
A portion of 232 Street between 64 Avenue and Hwy #10 will be closed from August 17 to mid-December so that the Salmon River Bridge can be replaced. While the road closure will be a temporary inconvenience, the result will be a safe, structurally sound bridge that will last for years to come.
“It’s unfortunate that things wear out, but they do and they must be replaced. In the long run this will be a much better bridge for the community,” said Township of Langley Engineer Colin Wright.
From August 17 to approximately mid-December, 232 Street between 64 Avenue and Highway #10 will be fully closed to allow the bridge building to take place. Motorists will be asked to detour along 64 Avenue, Glover Road, and Highway #10. A map outlining the detour route is featured on this week’s Township Page (see page xxxx)
“If people know about the road closure and route change in advance they can plan around it,” said Wright, adding that the Township will be monitoring and addressing any traffic issues that arise.
The Salmon River Bridge is being fully replaced, as the structure has deteriorated over the years and reached the end of its service life. The new replacement bridge will be safer for all those who use it, as it will be wider for vehicles passing over, and will have separated sidewalks to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians. The approaches to the new bridge will be also raised to reduce the “dip” leading to the structure.
Closing the road completely during construction will allow the new bridge to be built more quickly, and the result will a decreased cost for taxpayers, and increased safety for construction crews. The total closure and shortest completion time also means that critical elements will be completed during the window allowed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and will minimize the environmental impact on the Salmon River.
“This is a wise investment,” Wright said. “There will be some temporary inconvenience, but in the end we will have a new bridge that will keep us mobile and safe.”
