Toxic waste dumped in Aldergrove

Emergency responders closed off a lane for several hours Monday while a HAZMAT team removed barrels that were initially suspected of containing used chemicals from an illicit methedrine lab.
Shortly after 10 a.m. August 10, Langley RCMP attended to the 27000-block of Fraser Highway after two barrels were discovered dropped behind a business in the area.
The barrels were nearly full and were described as nearly translucent and containing a red liquid substance. There were some fumes emanating from the barrels.
Langley Township Fire Department was also on scene, in the lane south of Fraser Highway between 271 Street and Alder Lanes bowling alley.
Several businesses and apartment dwellers in the area were evacuated as police investigated.
One Langley RCMP officer and two other people were complaining of nausea and a burning sensation in their throat as a result of the fumes. BC Ambulance Service attended to assess and treat the three victims.
The Clandestine Lab Response Team assisted with the investigation, and a spokesperson said preliminary tests showed the substance was a petroleum distillate, possibly old gasoline that had been dumped.
