A Glen Valley dairy farm lost a hay barn to fire early Wednesday morning.

At 2 a.m., July 15 the West Abbotsford dairy farmer awoke to discover a fire in a large barn.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews were called to attend and upon arrival observed smoke and fire coming from the centre of a 100 foot by 400 foot barn used for hay storage. An adjacent barn was undamaged.

The dairy farmer had attempted to fight the fire using a water line and is to be credited for slowing the spread of fire until fire crews arrived, said Steve Oldroyd, Abbotsford fire prevention officer.

Forty-five fire fighters from six halls attended the fire on Grey Avenue, on the Abbotsford-Langley border.

Fire and smoke damage was limited to the one barn and hay stored in the barn. Loss estimates are not available. There were no injuries or loss of livestock.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Residents are reminded that fighting a fire should only be attempted if it is safe to do so. If attempting to fight a fire, always ensure that you are between an exit and the fire so that you have the option to escape. Remember, fire doubles in size every 30 seconds.
