The Young People’s Opera Society of BC (YPOS-BC) recently appointed a new executive director and board of directors at its annual general meeting in Surrey.
Taking over from the society’s founding executive director Barbara Gould is Reginald Pillay. Reginald will work with the new Board which includes president George Austin, one of the founders of the organization, vice president Patty Palm, secretary Nicole Slinn and treasurer Rosemary Cooper, along with past president Paddy Tennant. New directors at large are Sandra Fast, Stephen Rusch, and Nancy Slinn in addition to the re-election of Paula Cooper, Julia Fox and Monica Samson as directors at large.
Incoming president George Austin recognized the significant contributions of outgoing executive director, Barbara Gould and board members.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Barbara who is a rare gem and has been brilliant at what she has been able to accomplish with the society,” said Austin. “We also bid a fond adieu to hard working members from the 2008-2009 Board including vice president K C Gilroy, treasurer Marcia Meyer, and directors Lesley Jones, Terrelle Klose, Sylvia Metz, Adam Olgui and Angela Vickers. We appreciate their efforts and trust each will continue to be an integral part of this unique organization.”
Austin said the board is looking forward to the youthful perspective that Reginald will bring to his position as executive director.
“Together with the mentoring provided at all levels by some of our more senior members, we have a winning combination that is hard to beat,” he said.
This fall, the society will present Henry Purcell’s,The Faerie Queen at the Surrey Arts Centre. Adapted from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream the semi-opera will feature regal royalty, bumbling buffoons and fanciful fairies under the direction of Ellie King as artistic director and Vashti Fairbairn as music director.
The YPOS-BC is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide affordable opportunities for children and youth to learn about, participate in, and sing opera at a community level so as to foster appreciation of opera and to create a foundation for future opera performers and performances. The society welcomes people of all ages with a desire to perform or volunteer their time.
