Comeau in Envision Twilight concert
Updated: August 24, 2009 4:40 PM
Back by popular demand, Gary Comeau and the Voodoo All Stars return to end the 2009 Envision Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park on Friday, August 28 from 7 to 8 p.m.
Comeau is a singer-songwriter and musician of unusual diversity and talent. Playing guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and piano, he delivers originally crafted, high energy, New Orleans-style rockin’ roots and blues. Although Gary’s own roots are French-Acadian — he was born and raised in Nova Scotia — his soul seems to have taken a long and inspiring detour through Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta.
And while Gary does not consider himself to be a cajun or zydeco artist per se, he’s probably the most southern-sounding player in the Lower Mainland. The Georgia Strait states without hesitation that Vancouver’s roots-music scene has immensely benefited from Comeau’s presence.
The Island Folk Festival had this to say about Comeau: “Take the rhythm of the Maritime Acadian music, season well with Louisiana zydeco blues, add a twist of Highway 61 era Dylan, serve it up with great showmanship, and you’ve got a potent musical cocktail that will have your head spinning and your feet dancing!”
The August 28 Artists at Twilight feature artists in the gazebo are Antoinette Wessels (jewellery) and Luke Gregson (paintings.)
Bring a lawn chair or blanket to the park. The Log Cabin Café and the Blackberry Kitchen are open for business before and during the concert. Admission is free but donations are appreciated and encouraged. Your support along with the generous contributions of our sponsors will ensure that this series continues to 2010 and beyond.
Organizers of the Envision Twilight Concert Series would like to thank those who attended throughout the summer for their support. In this time of economic hardship, the community has come together and given itself the best summer in 19 years. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of community music in the park. What a joy it must be for the first members of the Mission Heritage Association who organized the first concerts in the park, to see what their vision has created for this community. Well done, Mission!
