For Jane (Deacon) Lyons, owning an Aldergrove business is a return to her roots. She spent her early years in Quesnel, and said the two towns are similar.
“I grew up in a small town, so I enjoy the small town atmosphere,” she said.
Lyons is the owner of the IDA Pharmacy in downtown Aldergrove, which celebrated its two-year anniversary this past weekend. She said the response to her business has been outstanding.
“It’s been great,” she said. “Everyone’s been very receptive.”
Lyons said the demand’s caused her to expand the pharmacy so she can offer more products.
“We have doubled in size over the last two years,” she said.
Lyons said one of the most enjoyable parts of the business for her is the connection to her customers, many of whom are familiar faces.
“We have a lot of dedicated customers,” she said. “I like being able to work with people.”
Lyons is no novice in either the pharmacy world or the business world, as she has a wealth of experience in each.
“This is the third store I’ve owned,” she said. “I do enjoy being my own boss.”
She moved to Aldergrove three years ago and thought the atmosphere was ripe for opening a downtown store.
“Aldergrove was set up for it,” she said. “There was a lot of change going on, but there was nothing right in the downtown core.”
There have been questions raised about the downtown lately, but Lyons said it’s improving significantly.
“It’s becoming a quaint, safe downtown,” she said.
Lyons said she welcomes the Township of Langley’s recent discussions about further revitalizing the downtown, though.
“The Township has stepped up to make sure the downtown is looking its best,” she said. “I think it’s moving in a positive direction.”
Lyons said the key element she’d like to see in any revitalization strategy is a focus on making the downtown look appealing and inclusive.
“To make it more inviting, I think that would be very beneficial,” she said.
Lyons said Aldergrove’s a worthwhile community for government, business leaders and individuals to invest in.
“Aldergrove’s a great community,” she said. “It deserves the attention it gets and it deserves more.”
