Sardis secondary school grad makes impact in TRU basketball debut

Tyus DeVries saw significant floor time for Thompson Rivers University vs the Grant McEwan Griffins.

A pair of Chilliwackians made their U-Sports basketball debut last weekend.

Tyus DeVries and Jon Steele suited up for Thompson Rivers University in two home games vs the Grant McEwan Griffins.

DeVries, a Sardis secondary school grad, logged 21 minutes in Friday’s 80-61 victory, pulling down five defensive rebounds and draining a three point shot. He also had one assist and two steals.

GW Graham grad Jon Steele played just one minute and picked up a personal foul.

In Saturday’s rematch, an 86-73 loss, DeVries was productive in 23 minutes. He recorded seven points on three-of-six shooting from the field, including a three pointer. DeVries pulled down another four rebounds, adding two assists.

Steele did not see action.

TRU hits the road this weekend for games Saturday and Sunday vs another Canada West rival, the UBC-Okanagan Heat.
