With the home crowd cheering them on, hosts Oak Bay high came close but couldn’t get past Nanaimo’s Dover Bay for the Island AAA senior boys volleyball championships on Saturday.
Dover Bay defeated Oak Bay in a four-set final 25-23, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-28.
In the third place game G.P. Vanier (Courtenay) swept Ballenas (Parksville) in three games, 25-15, 25-14 and 25-15.
A top four finish means Oak Bay will join Dover Bay, G.P. Vanier and Ballenas and advance to the B.C. AAA boys volleyball championships, Dec. 2-5 in Kelowna.
Semifinals: Dover Bay over Vanier: 25-17, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20. Oak Bay over Ballenas: 25-15, 25-20, 25-23. Fifth place game: Reynolds over Brooks 25-20, 25-17. Seventh place game: Claremont over Stelly’s 8-25, 27-25, 15-12.

Junior Spartans smash at Lower Islands
The Claremont Spartans went undefeated to capture the junior boys volleyball Lower Island championships last week at Oak Bay high.
Claremont downed Oak Bay in the final 25-20, 25-16.
The semifinals saw Claremont beat Reynolds 25-23, 25-17, while Oak Bay got past Belmont 25-17, 25-20. Reynolds took the bronze over Belmont in two sets, 25-14, 25-16.
Claremont, Oak Bay and Reynolds qualified for the Island tournament, set for this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 27-28) in Chemainus.
Three Victoria swimmers heading to Rio for world's
Victoria swimmer Nicholas Lapointe joins Brianna Nelson and team veteran Stephanie Dixon as part of Canada’s 30-member team competing at the International Paralympic Committee World Short Course Championships, Nov. 29-Dec. 5 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
The inaugural championships mark the first time Canadian swimmers are competing at a world event since the Beijing Paralympics.
