Home not so sweet for Chiefs

It was a tough weekend for the Langley Chiefs.

Rather than enjoying the benefits of playing on home ice, the junior A hockey club failed to pick up a single point as they dropped a trio of home contests.

The team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Westside Warriors, lost 5-4 to the Burnaby Express and then wrapped up three games in three nights with a 6-2 defeat to the red-hot Vernon Vipers.

The slump began with a visit from the Warriors, who were probably still smarting from a home loss to the Chiefs the week before.

And while the final margin of victory was five goals, the game was much closer until a flurry of four Westside goals — one of which came in the empty net — in the final 1:48.

A power-play goal from Cam Reid gave the visitors a lead in the first period and that goal held up.

Brendan Ellis doubled the lead — again on the power play — in the third.

Chiefs captain Mac Roy spoiled Kevin Jebsen's shutout big with three-and-a-half minutes remaining, but that was as close as Langley got.

Reid made it 3-1 and then Kyle Singleton scored into the empty net.

Quinn Gould and Singleton added goals in the final minute.

Langley found their offence on Friday night as they welcomed the Burnaby Express to the LEC. Unfortunately, the Express took advantage of their own opportunities and managed one more goal than the hosts, winning 5-4.

Burnaby's Luke Challier opened the scoring before Travis Irving and Colton Beck struck back for the Chiefs. But a late power-play goal from Dylan Herold evened things up at two after 20 minutes.

Mitch Pacey reclaimed the lead for the Chiefs, but Konrad Sander tied things up once more and Rich Manley, again with the man advantage, put the Express up for good late in the period.

Garrick Peary scored the eventual winner before Roy scored on a Chiefs power play.

Things did not get any easier for Langley as they looked to salvage the weekend.

The Chiefs hosted the defending national champions, the Vernon Vipers, on the Saturday night.

And the Vipers are proving lethal to the opposition this season as the team has lost just once in 28 games.

Vernon made that streak 19 straight wins with a 6-2 defeat of Langley. The Vipers also won on Sunday over Burnaby, stretching the winning streak to 20 games.

The Chiefs played Vernon tough in the opening 20 minutes with Kellen Jones and Roy exchanging first period goals. But the Vipers' Cole Ikkala struck on the power play with 19 seconds remaining to give the visitors the advantage heading into the dressing room.

And the Vernon trio of twin brothers Kellen and Connor Jones and Cory Kane took over in the second, as each recorded three points, with Connor Jones scoring twice and Kane notching the other.

Mike Collins made the score 6-1 early in the third, with Roy scoring his second of the night, and fourth in the past three games, to round out the scoring.

Langley, which sits tied for fourth in the Coastal Conference with 31 points, will look to get back on track this weekend.

They host the Nanaimo Clippers on Friday and the Powell River Kings on Saturday.

Both games have 7 p.m. starts at the LEC.

The Chiefs are tied in the standings with Nanaimo and trail third-place Powell River by two points.
