Not even expected to make the post-season, the Langley Stampeders are proving their season was no fluke.

The sixth-seeded Stampeders knocked off the No. 3 Cloverdale Bengals 30-22 in midget quarter-final playoff action on Sunday at Cloverdale Athletic Park.

The game featured two strong rushing attacks as the wet and windy conditions made it difficult for both teams.

Sunday’s contest started slowly with the teams trading touchdowns in a low-scoring first half.

The Bengals opened with a seven-yard touchdown run, while Langley countered with a 61-yard dash from Matt Berg.

The Stampeders took a one-point lead heading into the half on a single off a missed field goal.

After Cloverdale took the lead early in the second half, quarterback Cody Nelson put Langley back on top, scoring the first of his two touchdowns. Nelson ran up the middle 51 yards to the end zone.

The back-and-forth game continued with Cloverdale scoring a touchdown and a single early in the fourth to lead 22-15, but the Stamps responded with the game’s final 15 points.

Nelson, Mackenzie Buchannan, Charles Scott and Jorge Valle took turns picking up chunks of yardage along the ground, and then Nelson scored from four yards out to tie the score

Jeremy Filipek’s kick-off went through the end zone for a single and Langley would not surrender the lead from that point on.

Jeff Tritch delivered a huge hit, forcing the Cloverdale ball carrier to fumble, which the Stampeders recovered.

Late in game, Dylan McQuistin had a huge run on first down and then Scott ran the ball in from 22 yards out for the game-clinching touchdown.

Cloverdale had one last chance to score, but the Langley defence stood firm, getting the ball back.

Jeff Hughes, Michael Rai, Mack Cook and Mike Zahar shut down any inside running game, while the linebacking corps of Buchannan, Filipek, Kevin Dinh and John Vleeming were also outstanding in tracking down any plays to the outside.

— This was the first time every Langley Minor Football squad made the post-season and local teams went 5-2.

The Mavericks downed the Vancouver Trojans 34-0 in peewee action.

The Outlaws also won by shutout, beating the White Rock South Surrey Titans 54-0 in junior bantam play.

The Mustangs upset the South Delta Rams 17-7 in bantam play.

And the atom Colts downed the Cloverdale Tigers 32-14.

The Broncos lost their atom playoff game 48-0 to the South Delta Rams while the peewee Cowboys fell 50-0 against the Coquitlam Wildcats.
