WolfPack men in tough

The schedule isn’t getting any easier for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s basketball team.

Fresh off a 95-68 loss to the University of Calgary Dinos — the third-best team in Canada, according to the CIS rankings — in Cowtown last Saturday, the Pack are hosting the No. 2 team in the nation this weekend in the UBC Thunderbirds.

“The challenging aspect is UBC, as they are the No. 2 team in the CIS,” TRU head coach Thom Gillespie said in a release.

The TRU men have never beaten UBC on the hardwood.

The two-game set began last night, but scores were unavailable as of KTW press deadline.

The series continues tonight with an 8 p.m. tip-off at the Tournament Capital Centre.

WolfPack women look to top T-Birds

The TRU WolfPack women’s basketball team is hoping to improve on their .500 record this weekend.

The Lady Pack will host the UBC Thunderbirds, who enter the series with an identical 2-2 record.

After opening the season with a sweep of the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades — who have postponed their games this week as they deal with an apparent H1N1 outbreak that’s decimated their roster — TRU lost twice in Alberta last week, to the Lethbridge Pronghorns and the Calgary Dinos.

Like their male counterparts, TRU’s women hoopsters have yet to beat the T-Birds in their five years of CIS competition.

The women’s series also began last night, and scores were unavailable as of KTW press time.

But the two teams will face off again tonight. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the TCC.

TRU volleyball teams on the road

The WolfPack volleyballers are heading down the Coq’ to take on their provincial rivals .

Both TRU volleyball teams will hit the court on the campus of UBC tonight and tomorrow.

The TRU men take a 4-2 record into the weekend series.

“It’s a big weekend for both teams,” Pat Hennelly, head coach of TRU’s men’s volleyball squad, said in a release.

“UBC just lost two straight to Saskatchewan. They weren’t in the playoffs last year.

“It’s almost like we are playing in January. We have to be good on the road and consistent.”

TRU’s women’s volleyball team is winless in six matches this year.

“We are looking forward to the challenge,” women’s head coach Cal Wohlford said about the weekend in Vancouver.

“We want to show how much we’ve improved as a team from last year.

“We are pushing right with the other teams. That’s what it’s all about.”

First serve tonight and tomorrow is 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
