The winter may make some of us more sedentary, but boot camp fitness classes in Summerland are full to bursting.

Lynn Ellis, supervisor of fitness instructors and personal trainers through Parks and Recreation, said the indoor boot camp fitness classes are becoming popular.

“My classes are usually full, with a waiting list to run more.”

People going to the classes like them because of the challenge, Ellis said. She noted that the movements are always different, and always challenging.

The class demands intervals that test both cardiovascular endurance and strength. The training, said Ellis, has benefits in any sport.

“We work on agility and flexibility and speed and power.”

Ellis said the endurance part of the class is done with different physical movements, and strength training is achieved using bosu balls, weights and exercise bands.

She noted that the boot camp class is mostly for those between the age of 30 and 40, possibly up to the age of 50.

Her students are those trying to stay in shape so they can do other sports such as hiking, or skiing during the winter.

The early morning classes are especially popular, Ellis noted.

Parks and Recreation had to run a second class, and both filled up quickly.

Ellis said she is the only person really teaching there. Instructing demands a British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) fitness instructor or personal instructor certification.

While the classes may be full, Ellis noted the new recreation brochure is out Dec. 4 and people can register for classes at that time. Summerland Parks and Recreation can be reached at 250-494-0447.
