Another shootout win for Kwantlen

Most soccer teams dread going to a shootout.

The Kwantlen Eagles aren’t like most teams.

The women’s team opened the national championship Wednesday morning in Ontario with a victory over the host Humber Hawks, winning a shootout 4-2 after the two sides played to a scoreless draw.

It was the fourth straight shootout win for Kwantlen, a team which won three consecutive games via the penalty kick tiebreaker at the provincial tournament Oct. 23-25.

Kwantlen goalkeeper Amelia Ng was named Player of the Game, after she made several saves to shutout Humber, then stopped two of the four penalty kicks in the shootout.

The loss was just the second in 15 league and playoff games for the Hawks, which placed third in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association playoff tournament.

Kwantlen will finish round robin play today (Friday) against the Concordia Thunder, which won 10 and tied two in 12 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference league and playoff contests.

A win will send the Eagles into Saturday’s gold medal game.
