There’s a new rumble on the streets and a local team to cheer on for the 2009 edition of the Tour de Delta cycling races.

The trio of events in Delta, which launches B.C. Superweek July 10 with the MK Delta Prologue in North Delta, Brenco Criteriun on July 11 on the streets of Ladner Village, and concludes with racers crossing the Tsawwassen finish line in the White Spot Road Race July 12, will feature a pair of replica AC Cobra roadsters as the lead and chase cars.

The pair of classic racers were unveiled to tour sponsors and officials last week at an event at the Delta Town & Country Inn.

Also new to this year’s events, which carry a purse of $25,000, is a home team to root for—Trek Red Truck Racing.

Since the Symmetrics team--easily recognized in past events by their bright yellow booties—Trek Red Truck Racing is hoping to fill the large void Symmetrics left this season in B.C. cycling by providing local riders a chance to improve and compete against the best.

And so far it’s been a big year for the new team after nearly sweeping en route to the overall title in Spring Series races around the Lower Mainland through March and April, and podium results at big stage races in the Pacific Northwest, including overall victory for rider Rob Britton at the Tour of Walla Walla where Trek Red Truck broke through with a pair of stage wins at Mt. Hood Cycling Classic in June.

Britton beat a field of top North American teams to take the third stage at the famed Oregon race, and Trek Red Truck’s Jamie Sparling followed that up with victory in the final stage the next day.

It was an eye-opening, attention-getting performance, one the team plans to follow up at B.C. Superweek which has a total of $40,000 up for grabs here in Delta as well as events that are part of the 30th Tour de White Rock July 17-19—a challenging three-event weekend that starts with the Homelife Realty Hillclimb Friday night and Maximum Collision Criterium Saturday, before wrapping up with the scenic and storied Peace Arch News Road Race on Sunday.

“Our young guys are not afraid of the pros any more,” said Steve Engh, a director of the Trek Red Truck team. “They are learning that if they race well, if they race smart, and if they race as a team, we can beat them. So we’re really hoping to get on the podium at B.C. Superweek and at least show we can compete at the pro level as a team.”

Local rider interest extends to those who will be returning with new teams.

Among those expected are Tsawwassen’s own Cam Evans, who along with Andrew Pinfold are with Ouch Pro Cycling.

Will Routley is riding with Jelly Belly Pro Cycling, and Canadian Olympian Zach Bell and Ryan Anderson are suiting up with Kelly Benefits Pro Cycling.
