Less than one month earlier, the Langley Christian Lightning were crushed 66-33 by the Brookswood Bobcats.

“The first time we played them, just mentally, my team was defeated before we even got to the end of the first quarter,” admitted Langley Christian coach Cynthia Wergeland.

She was referring to her junior girls basketball team, the second seed at last week’s Langley district basketball championships.

The Lightning were 6-1 in league play while Brookswood was the top seed at 7-0.

Langley Christian was given a second shot at the Bobcats last Friday (Feb. 10) in the junior girls district championship game, which was played at Brookswood Secondary.

“They had almost already given up, so this time, we just talked about having a positive attitude and playing how we know we can play,” Wergeland said.

“And I had a number of girls step up that had not been a factor in previous games, (so) that was nice to see.”

The end result was a 59-53 Lightning victory.

Ava Krepp and Jenna Van Roekel led the Lightning with 17 points apiece.

Olivia Ohlmann,  Neyha Lali and Karsen Look countered for Brookswood, each scoring 14 points.

The teams were tied at 11 in the first quarter before Langley Christian closed the quarter on a 6-0 run. Brookswood cut the lead back to a single point before the Lightning finished the half strong to lead by nine at the break.

The ’Cats would claw back to within two points in the third quarter to 37-35 but that would be as close as they could get.

“This was one of our goals, to win districts,” Wergeland said, adding that her team has already qualified for next month’s BC provincial championships, by virtue of winning one of eight qualifier tournaments held around the province earlier this season.

Langley Christian, Brookswood, Credo Christian, Mountain and Walnut Grove are all competing at this week’s Fraser Valley championships.

Credo Christian defeated Mountain in the third-place game, which was also played on Friday.
